Writing lines

Type at the bottom of a page and press Enter. That is the whole of it. The next number appears and waits for the next one.

Write it the way you would say it

Smoke is not a task tracker and a line is not a ticket. There is no assignee field, no due date field, no priority field. A line is a sentence:

• Get Priya’s read on the pricing change before Thursday
• Waiting on Marcus for the Q4 headcount numbers
• Decide whether we’re doing the offsite in November
• Raise the on-call rotation with Priya — third time it’s come up

The fourth kind is the one people leave out and shouldn’t. The thing you keep meaning to raise and keep not raising is exactly what a 1:1 page is for.

What happens when you press Enter

It depends where you are:

• On your own page, the line lands and it is yours.
• On a shared page, what you write appears immediately to everybody on that page.
• On a page you have addressed a draft to, it stays a draft until you publish it.

The add row tells you which of these will happen while you are still typing.

Editing and deleting

Click a line to edit it. Everything on a page is editable by the people on it, with one exception: on a 1:1, each person can edit only their own lines. You cannot rewrite what your report said, and they cannot rewrite what you said.
