Signal — what Smoke brings you

Signal is everything that reaches you from Smoke. In the words you meet it in:

• here is a line worth adding
• here is a note on your line
• here is a page worth making
• here is where you and somebody else disagree
• here is what has arrived since you last read this

It comes to the work

There is no Smoke inbox, no dashboard, no digest to go and read. Everything arrives on the page it is about, next to the line it concerns. Smoke had a screen of its own once and it was removed: a summary of everything is somewhere you have to go, and somewhere you have to go is somewhere you stop going.

None of it does anything

This is why five different things share one word. A note is shown and never posted. A suggested line is text until you take it, and taking it writes the line exactly as typing it would. A suggested page opens the ordinary create box with the people filled in, and nothing exists until you save it.

Smoke offers. You act. There is no configuration in which that is not true.

It is never counted at you

You will not see “3 new things”. What has arrived from your mail and calendar is not a number Smoke can honestly give — a meeting moving is not three messages — so it does not pretend to one.
