Open, blocked and done

Every line is in one of three states.

  • Open — live work. The default, and most lines never leave it.
  • Blocked — it cannot move, and you can say what on. The reason sits with the line, so anybody on the page can see what would unblock it without asking.
  • Done — finished. Done lines collapse to the foot of the page so the live work is what you see.

There is no “dropped”

If you have decided not to do something, delete the line. Marking it done would be a lie in the record, and a fourth state for “abandoned” turns a list of work into an archive of intentions.

Smoke can offer done, and never applies it

When something in your mail or calendar says a thing has finished — a message confirming a shipment, a meeting that happened — Smoke can offer to mark the line done and shows you what it is going on. Taking it is one click, and it goes through exactly the same path as marking it done yourself. It never happens on its own.
