Comments

Any line can carry a conversation. Comments sit under the line they are about, everybody on the page sees them, and an unresolved one shows a small mark beside the line so it is findable later.

Resolve a comment when it has been dealt with. The line is the work; the comment is the argument about it, and it should not outlive being settled.

Mentions

Type @ and a name to pull somebody in. They are told, and the mention links back to the line.

You can only mention people who are on the page. If you name somebody who is not, the mention is removed before it is saved — quietly, and by the server rather than the browser. A mention is a notification waiting to happen, and one aimed at a non-member would deliver the contents of a page to somebody who is not on it.

If you want somebody to see a line, add them to the page. That is the only thing that grants access, and it is the honest version of what a mention would otherwise be doing.
